Set (research)

These are the images that I collected while doing my research. I flip-flopped between the images of trellis' and scaffolding. I liked the idea of the scaffolding for the framing and the main set piece, and I tried playing with different things with the trellis', mainly things like gates and walls, before realizing that adding too much to the framing would obstruct all view of the stage and the actors on it, so I took out the idea. Staging with a basic streel frame was the best option for visability.
There are also pictures of ship bunks within these photos. I wanted to represent the forecastle properly, and have beds and chairs, but that would also further obstruct view, due to extreme thrust of the stage.
There are pictures of spiral staircases within this series as well. I decided with one, potential two wrought iron spiral staircases from the upper balcony that represents the ship deck, to the boiler room and forecastle. The staircase needs to be retractable, able to coil in and out for the scene in while Mildred descends into the boiler room, and be able to retract back once she is back to the upper decks of the ship.
I have also included a few pictures of old wooden pop bottle crates. I found them when doing my prop research for bottles. I like the idea of the men using improvised materials for comfort and leisure, for stools and chairs, as the company probably only provides the essentials required for the men to live and work.
There are a couple pictures of the upper decks of ships, for reference when building the upper balcony to represent the ship deck.
